Balfour Beatty started on site at the end of April this year and the building is already taking shape. The external ground floor brick and blockwork has been completed and the steelwork from the ground to the first floor is in place.
In October the First Floor pre-cast plank installation will take place and the blockwork from the first to the second floor will commence.
The original Monks Park Clinic housed a range of services but was too small to meet the needs of the local community as it stands. Whilst serving the Monks Park area well, the clinic only provided primary healthcare to a very minute number of the bordering population of St. Raphael's. Being the fifth most deprived area in London the population of St. Raphael's is very young with a very high number of children below school age and more than 50% under the age of thirty. Relatively high numbers of these children are on the child protection register and there are high levels of accidents recorded amongst them. With high rates of teenage pregnancies and suicide rates amongst young Afro-Caribbean men.
The clinic is being redeveloped to include more land and two storeys. The services will then be refocused onto the complex needs of the local community. Services and support groups will be encouraged to operate outreach sessions in the local community centre on the St. Raphael's estate.
The Monks Park development aims to break down traditional barriers between health and social care, housing a comprehensive service for young people, young parents and their children. Integrated healthcare teams will have strong links and joint working strategies around issues such as child protection.
